Earlier, I wrote an article on how Amazon Web Services’ (NASDAQ:AMZN) Q1 was important due to the fact that it’s the first full quarter after the discovery of the Meltdown and Spectre CPU bugs, which are specific vulnerabilities in CPU chips that could potentially allow hackers to steal valuable information by exploiting the process of speculative execution. The software patches to mitigate the vulnerabilities caused by Meltdown and Spectre slow CPUs anywhere from 5% to 30%.
In terms of the fallout, the bugs have implications both on the downside and upside for AWS. In terms of the downside, the patching of the bugs will likely increase labor expenses, which could lower margins. In terms of the upside, many clients will have to use more cloud computing resources, which could increase revenue. Due to the fact that the CPU bugs affect nearly all the chips in the world, AWS might have enough pricing power to raise its prices enough to compensate for the additional labor costs and perhaps even benefit from the patches. The real question that Amazon’s first-quarter results would answer was whether the upside outweighed the downside, or vice-versa.
